With <strong>Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment)<\/strong>, you can build a redundant, stable, and enterprise-grade hyperconverged infrastructure without prohibitive licensing costs. In this technical guide, we show you step-by-step how to set up a Proxmox cluster in high availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Prerequisites and Network Architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To build a cluster with real fault tolerance, you need at least <strong>three physical nodes<\/strong>. Although Proxmox allows two-node clusters, you would require an external device (QDevice) to avoid the <em>split-brain<\/em> problem (where both nodes believe they have the majority and corrupt storage).<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Homogeneous hardware<\/strong>: Similar CPUs, RAM, and network cards across all three nodes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dedicated Corosync network<\/strong>: A switch and port dedicated exclusively to cluster traffic (low latency is crucial).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shared storage<\/strong>: Ceph (built-in hyperconverged) or a high-speed external NFS\/iSCSI storage array.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Configuring High Availability (HA) and Fencing<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high availability service is managed in <strong>Datacenter -> HA<\/strong>. To activate protection:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>HA Groups<\/strong>: Create a group (e.g., <em>all-nodes<\/em>) that includes your three nodes.
